Israel and Palestine have been at war for nearly five decades, with each side accusing the other of incitement and terrorism.
This conflict has become more intense in recent years due to Israel’s illegal settlements on occupied land in the West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law.
In June, Israel announced plans to build new settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, an action that would further inflame tensions.
Israel also announced it would suspend construction in settlements in eastern Jerusalem.
Israel is also seeking to annex the entirety of the West, and it plans to annex East Jerusalem.
This would constitute a “two-state solution,” according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israel says it wants a “united and sovereign” Palestinian state that will be governed by a Palestinian president, but Palestinians have long said they want the entire territory, including East Jerusalem and the West bank.
Israel’s right-wing government has also been criticized for its use of the army and other military means to push back Palestinian resistance, such as through violence, demolition of Palestinian homes, and destruction of Palestinian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools.
The two sides have also exchanged artillery fire, as well as deadly clashes in which Palestinians have been killed.
